School of Rock! Easter 2018 London Activities
For my Mum's Birthday, we went to London to see School of Rock, which is being shown at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane. Read on for our day in London, and review of the show!
We filled our day beforehand with a trip to the National Maritime Museum which was really interesting. The museum is filled with lots of exhibitions and even interactive rooms with a boat simulator. It is definitely suitable for all ages, although older children and adults benefit most from the exhibitions, whilst it is perfect for students with an interest or studying history. The best part is that it is free! Which means you can explore as much or as little as you want without feeling guilty after paying a fee. There is 'The Great British Seaside' exhibition which requires a small fee, however we did not see this. Inside there is a sweet, but pricey, gift shop and a small cafe. We thoroughly enjoyed the museum and vowed to go back to see the other exhibitions next time we were passing. We then walked up to the Royal Observatory and took an obligatory selfie, then had our first ice cream of the year from a little coffee shack.
We walked through the Old Royal Naval College (and made plans to go there next time too) and along the river, past the Cutty Sark and made our way to Greenwich station. Along the river there are plenty of places to eat, and unless you have a reservation near the theatres, I would definitely recommend eating before you get to the theatres. On the tube, we got off at Heron Quays and walked to Canary Wharf due to rail replacement services (this was badly signposted! Before getting off for something like this, consult your tube map!) and got back on to go to Covent Garden.
The musical tells the story of a wannabe rock star who borrows his friend's identity as a supply teacher. The show was incredible! Lively, gripping and hilarious. The music was amazing and the actors were perfect for their roles. Go and see this musical! You will not regret it, and it was completely worth the money. It was mostly child friendly but there was a little bit of swearing as it was the evening performance. It was really funny and we all really enjoyed it, definitely a great present.
We travelled into London at about 10am on a Thursday in the Easter Holidays. My Mum works in a school meaning that any activities have to either be a weekend, or in the holidays. We live in Essex, so the train journey is roughly 45 minutes from our closest railway station. Usually travelling into London (without a railcard) costs nearly £30 return off-peak. We went to the ticket office instead off using the ticket machine (by chance) and they informed us that we could get a group discount as there were three of us travelling together which made our tickets £18 each return. This was jaw dropping news as travelling to London for us is crazily expensive. Celyn and I both have 16 to 25 railcards making travelling in London cheaper as we connect our railcard to our oyster card for a third of tube and bus travel.

It was about 4pm at this time, trying to find anywhere for dinner was impossible. We walked around for nearly an hour as everywhere was packed or fully booked. This happened last time we went too, clearly we do not learn from our mistakes! We had dinner at Strada, as they had room, which was really nice. We had pizza and a soft drink each, and it cost £33 in total as we used our Tastecard for a 2 for 1 discount.
After dinner we went to the theatre to get our drinks before the rush. Drinks were £5 each for a 330ml
cup of cider/beer etc. Shots and mixers were more expensive but tea and coffee was decently priced. We went to our seats which were A27, A28 and A29 which were £52 each. It was more expensive as it was during the Easter Holidays. We had a great view which was completely unobstructed and presumably the seats were cheaper than some of the others due to a safety rail meaning smaller kids could not sit there. I would completely recommend these seats to anyone! I always use www.seatplan.com when booking theatre tickets as you can get a great idea of the value of the seat. Some seats are really expensive when you could actually get a better view with a better price with an 'obstruction'. Always check!

We headed back to Holborn to get the tube to Liverpool Street. We were home by midnight. It was a really great day and we look forward to doing something similar soon.
